We arrive in the hallway of Aaliyah’s hotel. We pass a couple of little old ladies who are coming down the hallway. Rag and I smile at them, and they giggle adorably as they traverse their way toward the elevators.

“We still got it.”

“Or at least one of us does.” He chortles.

We stand in front of the ornate window. I would knock but that would look strange to any humans that might step out of their doors while we are standing here. I shake my head and laugh.

“What has you laughing, Baz? Be kind enough to share with the class.”

“I don’t know her mobile number, nor can I just knock on her ‘door’ as, you can see, it isn’t so much a door as it is a window.”

“No, it is most certainly a doorway, Baz, but are you sure she is supposed to be home?”

“Yes, Rag, she doesn’t leave unless she has to…” Rag cocks his head expecting me to explain, “it’s a long story, and I am sure she can tell you.” I have already earned her ire. I glance around wondering if before we ‘knock’ I should remove my shirt. Heaven knows that she might at least see that I meant every word in my note.

“There is something in the rooms beyond but it’s not your Princess.”

I snap my head in Rag’s direction. “What the fuck?!” I whisper Aaliyah’s true name and drag Rag through the veil.

I am bracing for a fight. If Aaliyah’s step-monster or any of his goons have breached the wards I will dismember them. But there is no one here. Not the Umbra, not his goons, and not Aaliyah.

“Well, that was anticlimactic.”

“I thought you said there was someone here?”

Rag feels the air and furrows his brow. “I would have sworn there was.”

I walk around the rooms, Aaliyah’s mobile lays on the mahogany table with the bouquet of flowers I sent and a red envelope with her name on it in a script I recognize. Inside it is a hand scrawled note that isn’t from me. I know I have no right to, but I read it.

Sorry about the quick exit Princess,
